How to recover the ROOT password in RHEL?


How to recover a lost root password on a GRUB password protected RHEL system:

  1. Boot the system from a RHEL boot ISO image (VM) or CD
  2. Press ESC at the Welcome Screen
  3. Type “linux rescue” at the “boot:” prompt
  4. Accept all defaults when prompted for the initial Language and Keyboard Type configuration
  5. Select “No” when prompted if you “want to start the network interfaces on this system”
  6. Click on “Continue” at the Rescue screen (this will mount your Linux installation under /mnt/sysimage)
  7. Click on “OK” when informed your system has been mounted under /mnt/sysimage so you will get a shell
  8. Select “shell Start shell” when prompted and press “Ok”
  9. Type “chroot /mnt/sysimage” to make your system the root environment
  10. Change the root password by typing “passwd root”
  11. Type “exit” to go back to the previous screen where you can choose to reboot the system (select “reboot Reboot”)
  12. Logon by using the new password you’ve just changed
